Why free news media are important

The Society of Professional Journalists is holding a high school essay contest.

Students in grades nine through 12 are invited to write an original 300- to 500-word essay on the topic “Why free news media are important.”

Entries may be typed or handwritten but must be double-spaced.

The student with the top regional essay will get the chance to continue competing at the national level.

The first-place winner at the national level will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The second-place winner will receive $500. And the third-place winner gets $300.

Entries must be postmarked by March 4.
