I think a problem with Mexican/ Latino gangs is that they are almost directly linked with racism towards its own culture/race.

If we take a look at "sureno" gangs, their beliefs are in Los Angeles/ City based Mexican American culture. Most "sureno" gangs believe in "Brown Pride" and select mostly Mexican young men into their gang.

Norteno Gang Members focus on Mexican Culture as well. The difference is that Northern Gangs intergrate the "United Mexican Movement" with Cesar Chavez as a symbol of their movement or cause.

What both gang members don't realize is that they are being recruited to kill their own people and culture. This type of Ignorance will continue for most until they are old enough to recognize the problem or they get some sort of help whether it is religious/ family/ support within the community or friends. Gangs are everywhere and I think it is up to the individual to not be in a gang. The unfortunate part is like most of you mentioned, young kids are being taught to hate others (like racism) and are ruining their lives before they get the chance to think about what they are really doing.

Changes have to happen but it is up to everyone to help make those positive changes happen, not just for the Latino Community but for the rest of the people in society... Keep up saving our children!!!

Mrs. Wise will be greatly missed, she inspired so many students within her 11 years of teaching. Toppenish High School can never fill in the shoes she leaves behind...May the art program of Toppenish remain for the next generation of students coming through in the upcoming years, and the students who lives that have been changed by art work hard to help guarantee art in the future.

When my English teacher Mrs. Van Amburg and La Salle senior Kateri Town talked to my class about the Unleashed article in the newspaper, I wasn't too interested to be honest. Then, after my mom talked to me about going to the Unleashed website to see about the conditions for joining the Unleashed staff, I happened to stumble upon this touching story about Vanessa Archer while browsing the website for answers to my questions. This story is truly inspiring to anyone, no matter what condition they are in. The moment I read the first couple of sentences was the moment I could see into Vanessa's life at school and at home. Her challenges to speech and movement didn't stop her from being a voice in the classroom, thanks to the generosity of the Children's Wishes and Dreams. However, I thought that the most important part was how those problems, no matter how disabling they were, gave Vanessa the courage and hope to both overcome and make the best of them. Thanks for giving the people of Yakima this marvelous story to read and reflect on, just as I have done now. Keep up the amazing work, Unleashed team. Maybe you will see me next year on the team if more marvelous stories like this are in store.

Hi, Georgia! It was fun to see your post. This family also has an organization in Utah where it's established with our own family building, library, etc. You can see various people and activities at http://thomastolmanfamily.org, including regular updates on Facebook, etc. You might even find some of your ancestors in the genealogy tree on that website, or in one of the histories. We're always trying to make it easier to share stories and connect with more people. Cheers!

Gangs have taken a new tactic of recruiting members, no longer is a teenager targeted, but a child of 6-7 yrs of age. Why would gang leaders or members trust a child because of their innocence. A teenager who is targeted is either forced or intimidated into a gang however, a child's mind is still fresh, allowing corruption to enter in. Gangs greatest tool for recruitment involves the wild life desires--money, parties, drugs, drinking. For the lower-income communities, a child is drawn towards gangs for a common element that should be provided at HOME, a FAMILY, for many of these children, they come from broken, single-parent households. Often times their families are blinded of the reality that their child will ever become involved with a GANG.

We ask a simple question: How can we end the rise of gangs?
The simple answer it begins at home. If parents focus more attention towards their child's interest and of their whereabouts, then the problems will cease to matter. The development of child begins at home, how we choose to raise our children affects the type of civilian that is given to society.

Let us open our eyes to the violence that is occurring. Don't let the issue of gangs enter your life because of the result of a family member or a friend. Take part in your community.

I was once told by a great mentor, "It takes a village to raise a child."

I love just love the internet. Here I am, trying to figure out what to make for dinner on the other side of the couhtry in Massachusetts and decided to spend a few minutes tracing my husband's family tree. Genelogy is new to me. When my mother-in-law tried to tell me about the family years ago I thought it was pretentious and never paid attention. Now she is gone and I am begining to resarch with half remembered knowlege. I do know that my husband's branch of the family is also descended from Thomas and eventually ended up in Attleboro, MA., then Vermont to Washington, D.C. to Chicago. It is an amazingly prolific family, and it is always fun to discover new members of it.
